Subscriptions

Turn one time buyers into subscribers

A shopper adds a product you also sell on a subscription, but buys it once. AOVtools shows a subscribe and save prompt in the cart and switches that line onto a selling plan if they accept.

No product is added. The line they chose moves onto a plan, and can move back.

See the subscription upsell in action

A cart with a refill bought once. This is the dialog the app shows, and what happens when a shopper accepts.

Your cart 2 items
Daily refill, 500ml One time purchase $32.00
Coffee table book One time purchase $39.99
Subtotal$71.99

Two items, both bought once. Open the cart to see the offer.

Why one time buyers do not subscribe

Most stores put the subscribe and save option on the product page, as a radio button beside buy once. It is the right place for it and it is also the worst moment to ask. The shopper is still deciding whether they want the product at all, so the cheaper recurring option reads as a commitment rather than a saving.

By the time they reach the cart they have decided. They know what they are buying, they can see what it costs, and the same question lands differently. That is the gap this offer fills, and it is why a store can have subscriptions switched on and still convert almost nobody to them.

Works with the subscription app you already use

AOVtools reads the selling plans attached to your products, whichever app created them. It does not manage subscriptions, bill anyone, or hold customer records. It moves a cart line onto a plan and leaves the rest to whatever already runs your recurring orders.

That means Shopify Subscriptions, or any third party app that creates native Shopify selling plans, works without configuration. If the plan shows on your product page, it can be pitched in the cart.

If you would rather reward the switch with a product than a discount, a free gift can require a subscription, so it only appears once the shopper picks the recurring option.

When the subscribe and save prompt appears

The prompt appears when a shopper opens their cart, never while they are still adding to it. Adding to cart is the middle of something; opening the cart is a pause, and that is when a question is welcome rather than in the way.

It shows once per product per visit. Turning it down is remembered for the rest of the visit, and a cart that already holds a subscription is never asked at all.

Pin one selling plan, or let shoppers choose a delivery frequency

Pin one plan and the prompt is a single yes or no, which is what converts. Let the shopper choose and they pick from every plan the product is sold on, which is worth the extra decision only when cadence genuinely varies between customers.

Control which carts see the subscription offer

Conditions gate the prompt on the whole cart, so an upsell can be kept for the carts that deserve interrupting. All of them have to hold before anyone is asked.

  • They have at least a certain number of the item
  • The cart contains something else, by product, type, vendor or tag
  • The cart does not contain something
  • The cart total is above, or below, an amount
  • The cart holds a number of units

The cart does not contain is the one most merchants end up leaning on. Every other condition is a threshold, and without it the offer fires on carts it should leave alone: someone already buying a subscription box, or putting together a one off gift.

How the subscribe and save discount works

The selling plan already carries whatever discount you set up in Shopify, and that applies on its own the moment the line switches. Nothing here duplicates it.

If you want more than that, an extra discount comes off on top and is pinned to the plan being pitched, so it cannot land on a subscription the shopper happened to already have.

It switches the cart line, it never adds a product

No product is added to the cart and nothing is removed. The line the shopper chose moves onto a plan, keeping its quantity, and it can move back. That is the whole mechanic, and it is why this offer can be shown without a shopper feeling something was done to their basket.

Common questions

Does it add a product to the cart?

No. It moves a line the shopper already chose onto a selling plan, and it can move it back. Nothing is added and nothing is removed.

When does the prompt appear?

When the shopper opens their cart, not while they are still adding to it. Adding to cart is mid flow; opening the cart is a considered pause. It shows once per product per visit, and turning it down is remembered for the rest of the visit.

Can I stop it showing on every cart?

Yes. Conditions gate the prompt on the whole cart: a quantity of the item itself, something present or absent in the cart, a cart total floor or ceiling, or a unit count. All of them have to hold before a shopper is asked.

Where does the discount come from?

From the selling plan you already configured in Shopify, which applies on its own once the line switches. You can add an extra discount on top, pinned to that plan so it cannot land on a subscription the shopper already had.

What if the shopper is already subscribed?

Nothing is shown. A cart that already holds a subscription has answered the question, and a line already on a plan is never pitched again.

Does this work with Recharge, Skio, Loop or Shopify Subscriptions?

Yes, as long as the app creates native Shopify selling plans, which the mainstream ones do. AOVtools reads the plans already attached to your products rather than managing subscriptions itself, so if a plan shows on your product page it can be pitched in the cart. Nothing about your billing, customer portal or recurring orders changes.

Is this a subscribe and save widget?

It is the same offer, moved to a different moment. A subscribe and save widget lives on the product page, where the shopper is still deciding whether they want the product at all. This asks in the cart, once they have decided, which is a much easier yes.

Do I need a subscription app to use it?

Yes. AOVtools does not create selling plans or bill anyone. It moves a cart line onto a plan that already exists, so you need Shopify Subscriptions or a third party app to have set those up first.

Will it slow down my cart?

No. The prompt is part of the same script that draws the rewards widget, and switching a line uses Shopify's own cart API. There is no extra page load and no redirect to a landing page.

Does it work in a cart drawer as well as the cart page?

Both. The prompt appears when the shopper opens their cart, whether that is a drawer sliding in or the cart page itself.

Can I test it before shoppers see it?

Yes. Set the campaign to preview and it runs on a draft theme where only you can see it, with no discount registered against your store. Nothing reaches a shopper until you publish.

Start with one offer. Add the next when the first one earns it.

Build it in an afternoon, run it on a schedule, and keep the guardrails on while it works.
